‘Morning’ sickness is the clichéd sign of early pregnancy. It doesn’t just happen in the morning. 80% of pregnant women experience some nausea, and it’s most likely to be severe in the early months of pregnancy
Opinion is divided about morning sickness. Some scientists believe it has evolved to protect the developing fetus from possible harm from dangerous toxins in food. Other scientists, the pregnant ones, who are currently throwing up, believe what the rest of us also think – that there can’t possibly be an evolutionary advantage in making a pregnant woman eat everything twice, and that God is probably a man.
Pregnancy induces, in me, a very peculiar attitude to food. I know I need to eat, right now, but it’s a particular, specific food that I need, and I’m not sure what that is.
At this point, a kind of mental fruit machine starts whirring in my head, and a series of foods pass through my mind in succession. It goes like this: “Apple? No. Banana? No. Orange? No. Cherries? No. Radishes? YES! Definitely. Lots of radishes.”
Unfortunately, there is no way to predict the outcome of the fruit machine in advance.

“I first bought this book thinking that it would be a book for kids about birthing a baby. To my surprise the book was massive, a book for ME – page after page of well thought out information paired with wit, a great sense of humour, and perfect little doses of feminism dropped in.
This book is for all people who can become pregnant, before considering pregnancy, for people that are newly pregnant, for people that are interested in pregnancy and birth. I would probably suggest the age range from 15 onwards? Possibly sooner, the focus on pregnancy might not be on the radar, but the invaluable beginning of the book – from fertility tracking, to simple, clear, and hilarious information of how reproduction works – will be useful for all ages. An empowering tool for young women and their partners to have.
I laughed out loud, I shared quick snip bits with friends, and I read the birth story together with my 3 year old.
The illustrations are beautiful, raw, and effortlessly conscious of all peoples, races, sexualities, and families.” Amazon Review
“I would recommend this book to all of my friends, and theirs. It is a beautiful treasure to have on my bookshelf.”
