New book The Food of Love launches at a number of event this spring and summer Kate Evans gives a cosy, intimate explanation of the process of writing The Food of Love, illustrated with sketches and cartoons from her own breastfeeding experience. Q and A to follow. This is a great opportunity for breastfeeding mums to connect with each other, and an inspirational experience for mums-to-be. Snacks provided.
The Food of Love breastfeeding-awareness antenatal programme
Kate Evans can be booked to give an illustrated talk about breastfeeding for pregnant women. The lecture aims to enthuse women about breastfeeding, to equip them with the knowledge they will need to make it through those vital early weeks, and also, of course, to amuse and entertain.

An engaging and lively presentation on the science of climate change and its social impact. Kate Evans uses illustrations from her award-winning book to inform and inspire her audience, and explains how personal and political action can make a difference.

Schools-based workshops for students aged 14 to 18 entitled “What will the world be like in 50 years’ time?” Participants are given an excerpt from the comic book, and then guided through a stimulating discussion about how the impacts of climate change are likely to affect them.
I used to live in a tree
Kate uses illustrations and photos from her book Copse, as well as amusing personal anecdotes, to explain ecological direct activism for the curious. For adult audiences, this talk could be an after-dinner speech or a social sciences lecture. It is equally suitable for teenage audiences, and can also be altered for younger children.
Comics workshops for ages 8 to 80
You don’t have to be able to draw to draw comics. Kate Evans explains the basics of storytelling in a visual format. The emphasis is on experimentation and creative self-development. A range of examples of cartoon art are provided for reference, with Kate on hand to explain the tricks of the trade. Includes an introduction to desktop publishing, self publishing and zine production.
Issue-based comics workshops for teenagers
Adolescents can be enthusiastic about comics. Why not harness that enthusiasm to produce a zine on an educational theme? Kate Evans’s introduction to creating comics can be combined with input from youth leaders on a particular theme, for example, bullying, or alcohol awareness. The workshop process encourages an open discussion of the issues in a relaxed environment. The production of the comic builds self-esteem in workshop participants, and results in a publication that can communicate ideas about the subject to the peer group in an accessible way.
