Rocket Man – An Evening with Majid Adin and Kate Evans

May 15, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

£6 – £12
Majid Adin arrived in the UK, after several failed attempts at holding on to the underside of the truck, by locking himself in a fridge on the back of the lorry from the Refugee camps in Northern France. An Iranian animator persecuted for challenging religious conservatism through his work, Adin won a competition to animate the official video for Elton John’s iconic Rocket Man. What he produced was a moving account of a Refugee’s journey from the Middle East to the UK in search of a better life. Many camps, like the ones depicted in the animation, no longer exist, with many refugees now living in the woods or moving daily to new sites, yet there is very little media or literature surrounding the issue.

Kate Evans, cartoonist, author and activist will be interviewing Adin about illustrating the refugee crisis and how important it is to share these stories. Her latest graphic novel, Threads from the Refugee Crisis, documents the squalid conditions refugees are living in and their hope at, somehow, trying to cross into the UK.
Join us for a raw and insightful conversation on how to highlight the inhumane treatment of refugees in Europe and how we get the conversation back into mainstream media. Majid Adin is an Iranian artist and animator. Forced to leave his home country because of his political cartoons, he now lives in London. He creates award-winning animations exploring dislocation, loneliness, war and the refugee experience. Kate Evans is a cartoonist, author and activist. Her brief visits to the Calais Jungle refugee camp provided the material for her fifth graphic novel Threads from the Refugee Crisis which won the Broken Frontier Award for Graphic Non-Fiction 2017.
